About Us

Freight House Early Learning & Care Inc. was originally incorporated as Freight House Day Nursery Inc. at 505 Ross Ave. in December 1974. Our original site is uniquely housed in an old rail freight building originally operated by Great Northern Railway, which also accommodates a variety of other community programs.

Our original space is now home to a 44 space preschool. Through the years we have under gone a variety of renovations to update and maintain a safe and unique character environment.

We expanded in 2000 to 215 Isabel St. which housed a preschool site. In 2009 after a lengthy renovation we opened 215 Isabel St. as a 22 space infant/toddler site. The site then went under massive renovations by the landlord (for 5 long years we were moved to 319 Elgin Ave). We re-opened our Infant site, July 2015, at  the south end of the 215 Isabel St. complex which is now home to the Immigrant Refugee Community of Manitoba (IRCOM).

We opened an New preschool site in the same complex as part of the IRCOM's Early Childhood HUB which we refer to as our IRCOM Preschool  January 2016.

We opened a school age site in Dufferin School, our community school January 05, 2009.

In 2011 we opened an infant/preschool/school age site established for the flood evacuees of Lake St. Martin First Nations. This centre was home to 32 children 3 months to 12 years. These spaces were transferred into our existing centre in July 2015.

On December 14, 2020 we opened our fifth site, a 74 space infant and preschool located at 560 Logan Ave. on Dufferin School Grounds. This massive undertaking was delayed significantly (8 months) by the COVID-19 virus that swept through the province.

We are inclusive to all children and families and pride our self in developing positive relationships and flexibility to support our families needs.

FHELC is a proud member of the Centennial Community. The centre maintains a high ratio of trained professionals of which many have remained members of our team for over 20 years.
