If you are looking for a way to deepen your devotion to Lord Krishna, you may want to download the PDF of Saranagati, a collection of 50 Bengali songs written by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura in 1893. Saranagati means surrendered to the Lords shelter, and it outlines the six-fold process of devotional surrender to the Supreme Lord.
Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura was a prominent acharya (spiritual teacher) in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, which follows the teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the incarnation of Lord Krishna who appeared in India in the 15th century. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu taught that the easiest and most sublime way to attain love of God in this age of Kali is by chanting His holy names, especially the Hare Krishna mantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.
Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura was also a pioneer in spreading Krishna consciousness all over the world. He predicted that one day people from all countries and backgrounds would join together in chanting the holy names of Krishna. He also wrote many books and songs to explain the philosophy and practice of bhakti-yoga, or the yoga of love and devotion.
One of his most famous works is Saranagati, which he composed in a simple and sweet language that anyone can understand and appreciate. The songs are divided into six sections, corresponding to the six symptoms of surrender:
Dainya: Humility. Recognizing ones fallen condition and need for Krishnas mercy.
Atma-nivedana: Dedication of the self. Offering ones body, mind, and soul to Krishnas service.
Goptrtve varana: Acceptance of Krishna as ones only protector. Having full faith that Krishna will always protect and maintain His devotees.
Avasya raksibe Krishna: Confidence that Krishna will surely protect. Having no doubt or anxiety about Krishnas care and guidance.
Bhakti-anukula-matra karyera svikara: Acceptance of only what is favorable for devotion. Rejecting anything that is unfavorable or distracting from ones spiritual progress.
Bhakti-pratikula-bhava varjanangikara: Rejection of what is unfavorable for devotion. Avoiding sinful activities, bad association, and material attachments that hinder ones love for Krishna.
By following these principles of surrender, one can gradually develop pure love for Krishna, which is the ultimate goal of human life. Saranagati is a treasure of devotional songs that can inspire and nourish anyone who wants to cultivate a sincere and intimate relationship with the Supreme Lord.
